But Halloween is the time of year for all to enjoy, celebrate and indulge.

Speaking of indulging, I don't just regard October 31st as Halloween, I celebrate it all month! It's time to have my own personal film festival full of favorite fright flicks.

I sometimes pick a theme as a starting point to choose the films I'm going to see. In years past I've had Zombie Month, Slasher Month, Ghost Month, Satan Month, Animal Month and other similar categories. It's fun to hunt down films in my collection as well as rentals or new DVDs to buy that fit in with the theme. Then it's time to sit down with my favorite plate of pasta, complete with plenty of bloody-red marinara or meat sauce, and pork out on horror.

This year I went simple and obvious, and just picked 80s horror movies. It's such an easy theme, and you can't fit in more than a small fraction of the many available films from that decade that kick ass for every reason kickassable. No matter what age you are, you have to tip your severed head in honor of the 80s horror films.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_P5s8PQMYVZ4/SPgSdULfHzI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/DVv0ZmP6MCY/s320/nightmareonelmstreet.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257972859797446450" />

From the classy and original (Nightmare on Elm Street, American Werewolf in London) to the hearty meat-and-potatoes basics (Friday the Thirteenth, The Prowler), from the wild and sleazy (Basket Case, Street Trash) to the cheap and cheezy (Deadly Spawn, Bad Taste, Silent Night Deadly Night), from the avalanche of gut-punches (The Thing, Day of the Dead) to the unexpected and creepy (Dead and Buried, April Fool's Day), from home plate (Poltergeist) to left field (Phenomena), from the good (Re-Animator, Evil Dead) the bad (Parasite, Visiting Hours) the ugly (New York Ripper) and the really ugly (Maniac, Brain Damage), the 80s has it all.

Tonight I revisited A Nightmare On Elm Street. You've probably seen the film two, three, maybe fifty times. But you owe it to yourself to try to clear your mind and watch the film again and just enjoy. Just soak in the story, the cinematography, the sound effects, the experience. Like they used to say in the home video ads, "watch it again for the first time".

And remember that there was a time when this guy used to be scary...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_P5s8PQMYVZ4/SPgSuTzlD0I/AAAAAAAAAEY/3N5EEX0-3I4/s320/freddyarms.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257973151754948418" />

Scary Funny #1

Submitted for your approval, a classic team-up of horror killers. At least until I get a new computer, which shouldn’t be too awfully long.

However, this blog will be used not as a blog with shownotes for the podcast, but as a blog for blog blogging blog. Blog.

The Ghoulzone will focus on "retro" horror, that is mostly 70s and 80s era horror, and some 90s, 60s, 50s, 40s, 30s, and milleniums thrown in as per my whim.

I’m somewhat prepared to keep this thing going, but this is my fourth blog. I let the others die, like a goldfish that some stupid kid doesn’t feed. But nobody looks at the goldfish anyway, and nobody notices it until it starts to stink. Then they flush it.

Here is another goldfish. I scrapped the first show files because I just could not get the voice tracks to work.

There’s an issue with loudness; you can’t hear me on the mic, and I had to put my mouth on the thing to get some sound. I tried to tweak the loudness, but that just caused distortion and feedback noise.

Did someone say podcasting was easy?

I’ll have to get a new computer, the one I have is 5 years old. I haven’t budgeted for one, so I’m not sure when I can do it. There are some sales out there, and I’m going on the hunt.

Some delay with the website too, designs are in just need to set up with the provider and get it all online. Soon baby, soon.

Thank you for checking in with me, and sorry for the delays. I don’t want to put out a crappy-ass podcast.

Soon The Dead Will Rise

I’m now working on the website design. It’s going to be rather bare bones. Got a couple of episodes in the can and all will be posted probably in January. I have some vacation time this holiday so that’ll give me time.

Hang in there, it’s on the way, and I have plenty to say.

Preparation G

I haven’t found any file storage sites that I like, so I’m going to bite the bullet and pay for a website space. This way I can host the archives and plenty of them and keep them there for people to find.

The drawback is that I’m going to have to design a website now, and it’s going to take a while. I’ll probably use a nice template. The provider I’m going to use includes forum software in their website package, so I’ll add message boards and other stuff to keep you entertained. I hope you like what you see and bookmark the site as one of your horror movie homes away from home. That you’ll probably visit while you’re at your home. Anyway.

I did lay down most of episode one of the Ghoulzone Horror Podcast. These take lots of editing too, but I’m okay with the results. I’m afraid the sound levels are a bit wonky, but it’s still going to be a fun time for all.

Hang in there and check back with me over the next two months. I’ll put the link to the new website here and announce when it’s ready. I’ll also have two or more podcast episodes there and ready so you can pork out.

Still Almost Ready

I’m having some microphone issues. It odd because I have a pretty good mic, not one of those ones you get with the computer but an honest to god mic.

My voice sounds a little muffled, and if I set the loudness too high to compensate, it adds feedback and noise. This is going to require a lot of editing to make each episode.

Got a theme ready and some fun soundclips and stingers I made for the show. I want to go get more sounds for my library.

Soon I’ll start putting shows up. I also can’t find a good online storage. There’s a couple of good free ones I found, but they make you log in to download my file and I though that was too much of a hassle for you. I guess I’ll have to bite the bullet and buy a website space so I can store the files.

We’re coming along though. Sit tight.

Music Mixing and Sound File Storage

Well, I’m all set up as far as recording. Now I’m playing with some sound files which will help make this a fun podcast.

I’m even mixing my own themes. I love sound mixing.

The one issue I’ve run into is where to store the mp3 files? I’m looking over some sites now, but I’d like to hold out for a lot of space for free. 1 gig should be enough for a nice archive.

Also, I’m doing show notes for the first several episodes. To start out with, I’m going to go for doing shows twice a month, posted every other Monday.

BTW, how do you like the new title banner up top there? I should run a contest to see if anyone can name all the horror movies represented.

Make Ready The Podcast

I just purchased some minor equipment like a stand and windscreen for the microphone. Hosted by rantmaster Fake Larry, who brings you reviews of classic horror film DVDs and today’s fright flicks. A fun and informative analysis of horror and cult cinema, as well as commentary on horror news, anecdotes, opinion pieces, and as much all-around tomfoolery as can be crammed into each episode.

Fake Larry gives it to you straight with no sugar coating, in a humorous way sure to bring a smile to your face and cynicism to your mind.

If you’re looking for a serious podcast about horror movies, this is probably not for you. There are lots of great horror podcasts available, see itunes for more information.

This podcast is made for fun. Although I do reviews and examine films, there’s really a sense of the same kind of enjoyment we get from watching good cult films. There’s a little bit of fact, a lot of goofy shit. To get the best results from this podcast, just run with it.

WARNING: this podcast is for mature audiences.

Grab a grain of salt and listen in to the Ghoulzone.
